Creating Custom Number and Date Formats
Number Formatting
- Select cell or range containing the number to format.
- Go to Home tab and select Number category from Number group.
Decimal Point Display
- Select cell or range containing a number to format.
- Select Increase Decimal or Decrease Decimal from Number group.
Applying and Removing Comma Style Formatting (To Indicate Thousands)
- Select cell or range containing the number to format.
- Select Comma style from Number group.
- The number will be formatted with thousand separator and 2 decimal points
Currency Symbol
- Select cell or range containing the number to format.
- Select Accounting Number Format from Number group.
- The number will be formatted with thousand separator, 2 decimal points and default currency symbol based on the default language set.
- To choose other currency, click the pull-down button next to the function and select More Accounting Formats.
Percentages
- Select cell or range containing the number to format.
- Select Percent Style from Number group.
Date Styles
When you type something like 2/2 in a cell, Excel knows you’re typing a date and formats it based on the date setting in Control Panel. Excel might format it as 2-Feb.
To change to different date format
- Select cell or range containing date to format.
- Select Short Date or Long Date category from Number group.
- For more date format, click the Number group dialog box launcher and select a style from Date category.
